# Invoices and tax ID

> Download invoices, add a tax ID and change the card - in Stripe's billing portal, which you open from Billing & plans - and get older invoices.

Invoices, payment methods and the tax ID live in Stripe's billing portal. You open it from **Settings**, **Billing & plans**. Every charge has an invoice there: the plan, top-ups, auto-recharge and domains.

## Do it yourself

### Download an invoice

1. Open **Settings**, then **Billing & plans**.
2. Under **Billing Portal**, choose **Open Billing Portal**. Stripe's portal opens in the same tab. After a plan ends, **Billing Portal** is at the top of the page, above the plans.
3. Find the invoice in the portal's invoice history and download it.
4. To come back, use the portal's link back to Playcode.

### Add a tax ID

1. Open the billing portal as above.
2. Add the tax ID in the portal's billing information.
3. The tax ID shows on invoices from then on. Invoices that already exist do not change.

When you start a plan, Stripe's checkout page also has an optional tax ID field. It asks for a billing address when the payment method or tax rules need one. Both are saved for later invoices.

### Change the card

- For the plan's renewals: change the payment method in the billing portal.
- For top-ups and auto-recharge: in **Billing & plans**, choose **Auto-recharge settings**, then **Change** under **Payment Method**, and save the new card on Stripe's page. Nothing is charged.

Only you enter card details, on Stripe's pages. Playcode keeps the card's brand, last four digits and expiry date.

## If it doesn't work

### "Couldn't open the billing portal. Please try again."

Try again. The portal opens only for the Admins of a workspace that has paid Playcode at least once. If it still does not open, [get help from a person](/docs/help/get-help-from-a-person).

### The plan has ended

The invoices stay in the billing portal. **Billing & plans** shows the plans, with **Billing Portal** above them: choose **Open Billing Portal**.

### The workspace never paid

A workspace that never started a checkout has no billing portal, so **Billing & plans** shows no **Billing Portal**. If you paid from another workspace, switch to that workspace first.

### An old invoice has no tax ID

Stripe does not change an invoice once it exists. The tax ID shows from the next invoice.

### You want each renewal invoice by email

A person at Playcode can turn on invoice emails for the workspace's renewals: [get help from a person](/docs/help/get-help-from-a-person).

## Limits

- Only the Admins of a workspace can open its billing portal. **Billing & plans** shows **Open Billing Portal** from the workspace's first checkout on, with a plan or after the plan ends. A checkout left unpaid opens an empty portal.
- Changing the email you sign in with does not change the email on the workspace's invoices. It stays the one the workspace had at its first payment.
- The billing portal is Stripe's page. The agent cannot open it, download invoices or change the card.
