# Your Playcode address

> Every published project gets a free address on playcode.site or playcode.run. On Pro or Max you can choose the name in it.

> Ask Playcode's agent: "Change this site's address to my-shop." It sets the name if it is free; a static site answers at the new address after you publish again.

A published static site answers at an address on `playcode.site`, and a Cloud app at an address on `playcode.run`. On a Pro or Max plan you can choose the first part of the address, like `my-shop.playcode.site`.

## Do it yourself

### A static site

1. Open the project and choose **Publish**.
2. Under **Your address**, next to **Free address:**, choose **Change it**.
3. Type the name. When the name is free and valid, **Set subdomain** appears. Choose it.
4. Choose **Publish update**, or **Publish** if the site is not live yet. The site answers at the new address after this publish.

You can also change the name in **Settings**, **Domain & publish**: choose **Change it** beside the free address, type the name and choose **Save**.

### A Cloud app

1. Open the project and choose **Publish**.
2. Before the first publish, type the name in **Custom Subdomain**. The hint shows "Will be reachable at my-shop.playcode.run". Then choose **Publish**.
3. After the first publish, go to **Your address**, choose **Change it**, type the name and choose **Save subdomain**. The app confirms "Subdomain saved: my-shop.playcode.run".

## If it doesn't work

### "Validation failed" under the name

The name is taken by another project, or it breaks a rule from the list under Limits, for example it starts with a number or has an underscore. Try another name, for example with a word added: `my-shop-berlin`. The agent reports the exact reason, like "Sorry, name already taken".

### "Subdomain must be at least 2 characters"

Type a longer name.

### The app asks you to upgrade

Choosing the name needs a Pro or Max plan. See [Plans](/docs/account-and-billing/plans).

### The new address does not open

A static site answers at a new name only after the next publish. Choose **Publish update**.

### "Couldn't save subdomain"

For a Cloud app, the name may be taken by another app or kept for Playcode itself, or the app may already have its 5 names. Try another name. To free a name slot, [ask a person](/docs/help/get-help-from-a-person).

## Limits

- Choosing the name needs a Pro or Max plan. A name you chose stays if the plan ends; changing it again needs a plan.
- A static site's name uses lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. It starts with a letter, ends with a letter or a number, has no two hyphens in a row, and has at least 2 characters. It can be up to 46 characters, and each hyphen counts as two.
- A Cloud app's name has 2 to 32 characters: lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, with no hyphen at the start or the end.
- A static site always answers at its number address too, like `12345.playcode.site`, after you choose a name.
- After you rename a static site, the old name is free, and another project can take it.
- A Cloud app keeps its first address and every name you give it. It can have up to 5 names besides the first address, and you cannot remove a name in the app. Saving a name the app already had makes it the main address again.
- To use a domain of your own, see [Connect a domain you own](/docs/publish/connect-a-domain) or [Buy a domain](/docs/publish/buy-a-domain).
