Snapshots and rollback

A checkpoint is a snapshot of one Cloud computer: its code, installed packages, database and uploaded files. Restoring it puts that computer back to the saved point and discards every change made on it after that point.

Ask the agent

Show this app's checkpoints and restore the one from before the last change.

It lists the checkpoints and asks you which one to restore before it restores; a restore discards everything made after that checkpoint.

Do it yourself

#

Save a checkpoint

#
  1. Open the project menu (☰ and the project name, at the top left) and choose Checkpoint history….
  2. In the DEV or PROD section, choose New checkpoint.
  3. Give it a name that says why, like "before dropping the sessions table", and choose Create checkpoint.

Restore a checkpoint

#
  1. Open Checkpoint history….
  2. In the DEV or PROD section, find the checkpoint and choose Restore.
  3. For production, confirm with Restore: "Your live site changes for everyone the moment this completes." A development checkpoint restores without a question.
  4. Wait for "Checkpoint restored. Reloading…". The page reloads when the restore is done.

If it doesn't work

#

New checkpoint is greyed out

#

The computer is not ready yet. Its tooltip says "Computer is not ready (...). Wait for provisioning to finish."

"Save this checkpoint?"

#

The computer already has 20 checkpoints of yours and the agent's: "You have 20 checkpoints, the limit." Choose Create checkpoint to delete the oldest one and save the new one, or delete a checkpoint you no longer need first.

The restore shows an error

#

The restore did not finish, and the message names the reason. Try again, or ask a person and include the project's address.

Publish stops after you restored the development computer

#

If the restored point is older than the published version, Publish says "This workspace is based on older history than the published version". Ask the agent to reconcile the two histories, then publish again.

Limits

#
  • A checkpoint belongs to one computer. Restoring a development checkpoint does not change production, and restoring a production checkpoint does not change development.
  • Each computer keeps up to 20 checkpoints made by you and the agent. At the limit, the agent replaces its own oldest checkpoint; your checkpoints are never replaced without your choice.
  • Each publish after the first saves a Before publish checkpoint of production first. The newest 10 are kept, older ones are removed every day, and you cannot delete them yourself.
  • A checkpoint does not include secrets: restoring keeps their current values. See Secrets and environment.
  • During a restore the computer stops and starts again. A production restore takes the app offline for that time.
  • Static sites have their own checkpoints. See Undo and checkpoints.
