Playcode Classic

React Playground

Use this React playground online: it runs your components in your browser. Edit App.jsx and the app updates as you type, with React 18 and Tailwind CSS in the starter and npm packages a click away. Nothing to install and no account to start; sign in to save and share. It’s part of Playcode Classic, Playcode’s free code tools.

Free. No account needed to start.

In a playground sandbox a young developer and Play build an app out of big building bricks on a baseplate; Play snaps in the last brick, an orange button, and a rocket waits beyond the fence.

Edit a component. The app follows.

The preview rebuilds a moment after you type. Each edit reloads the app, so its state starts fresh.

At a little marionette theatre in the playground, Play works the strings from above, and the puppet on stage, a small web page with arms, waves while the young developer watches from a bench.

When the app needs a server

The playground runs in your browser: no server, no Next.js, no React Native. When an app needs a backend, a database and its own domain, Playcode AI builds it and Playcode Cloud runs it, on a paid plan.

In the sandbox stands a toy rocket built of bricks; beyond the fence the real rocket stands on its pad, wired to a fuel line, and Play presents it to the young developer with an open palm.

Part of Playcode Classic

Playcode began in 2016 as a browser coding environment. This playground is one of its free code tools, which we now call Playcode Classic.

Playcode today is an AI platform for building and running websites and apps.

Play stands at the open gate of an old playground and presents what lies beyond it: a rocket ready on its launch pad.

Questions people ask

  • Is this React online editor free?

Yes. Writing and previewing is free and needs no account. A free account keeps up to three saved projects, public or private; a custom domain needs a paid plan, and the AI chat uses credits.

  • Which React version does it use?

React 18.3.1 in every starter. The version comes from package.json.

  • Can I run React code online without installing anything?

Yes. The playground is a React sandbox in your browser, and it works as a React online compiler: write a component and it renders as you type. There is no project to set up.

  • Does it support JSX and TypeScript?

Yes. .jsx and .tsx files compile in the preview; the React and TypeScript starter checks your types as you write.

  • Can I use npm packages?

Yes. Import a package, pick a version and press Install, or add it from the Packages panel.

  • Does it have hot reload?

The app updates as you type, but each edit reloads it, so state starts over. There’s no Fast Refresh yet.

  • Can I use Tailwind CSS or CSS Modules?

Tailwind CSS is in the starter. CSS Modules work as .module.css files; .module.scss isn’t supported yet.

  • Can I build with Next.js or React Native here?

No. The playground runs React in your browser. For an app with a server and a database, Playcode AI builds it and Playcode Cloud runs it, on a paid plan.

  • Can I open a .jsx file?

Yes. Paste it into a file in the React starter and render it from index.jsx.

  • Can I share my playground?

Yes. Sign in and save the project. In its Share tab, set Anyone with the link to Can view, then copy the link.

  • Is this playground part of Playcode?

Yes. This playground is part of Playcode Classic, Playcode’s free code tools. Playcode began in 2016 as a browser coding environment. Today it is an AI platform for building and running websites and apps.
