How to Save Credits

The same task, the same finished website, can cost $25 in the hands of a careful user or $250 in the hands of someone learning. This is the most important skill you can build as a Playcode user.

The expensive mistake

"Add some animations to the site" sounds tiny. To the AI it means: read every page, understand every component, edit them all. One innocent-looking prompt can silently spend more than a week of careful, scoped work. The words that sound small are often the most expensive.

Rule 1: Think one block at a time

Work page by page. Block by block. One section at a time. Look at the result, fix what is off, move on. Small changes are cheap to run, cheap to review, and cheap to roll back when something breaks.

Bad vs. Good prompts

  • Bad: "Make everything more modern."
  • Good: "Redesign the hero on the home page."
  • Bad: "Add animations to the site."
  • Good: "Add a subtle fade-in to the pricing cards."

Rule 2: One chat, one to three features

Every message in a chat carries the entire previous conversation along with it. The longer a chat runs, the more each new message costs, and the more the AI gets distracted by stale context. Close the chat and start fresh every few features.

A brand new chat is small, cheap, and focused. Each message costs a fraction of what a 30-message chat costs, and the AI makes fewer mistakes. If you see it repeating itself, forgetting what you said, or getting confused, that is your cue to start a new one.

Rule 3: Bigger project, bigger messages

The larger your project, the more files the AI has to read on every message, and the more each message costs. A 5-page site has cheap messages; a 50-page site has expensive ones.

Do not try to clone a 500-page competitor in a day. Even mature products grew one page at a time. Build in stages. Ship the core. Add the next thing when users actually need it.

Rule 4: Estimate before you commit

Before any big change, ask the AI directly: "How much would this roughly cost?" It will not be exact, but it will look at which files would change and give you a ballpark. That single question can save you from a surprise bill.

Rule 5: Pick the right model

Economy handles most of the work. Smart and Pro cost 10 to 20 times more per token, so save them for complex interactive components, tricky logic, and polish passes that really matter. See Choose the Right Model for the details.

Watch your spend in real time

Your Billing → Usage page updates live as you work. If you are deep in a session and want to check how things are going, open it. It is built for exactly that moment.
